Paper Crush: Megan & Mike’s Stitched Save the Dates
Megan and Mike were such fun clients and designing their Kate Spade inspired fete was a dream come true for me! When Megan mentioned that she wanted to use images from their nautical engagement session with the effervescent Bruce Plotkin for her save the date, I knew we had to do something different. She loves paper and has an open mind for design, so I approached Nichole of Coral Pheasant with the simple idea: can we do something different with someone’s engagement pictures for a save the date? Bingo! Nichole had actually been visualizing this concept for some time and Megan fell in love with it! A tri-fold card with their pictures on it, neatly tucked into a stitched envelope. Another card in the right hand pocket contained all the important date saving details. Add in some gorgeous calligraphy and a few vintage stamps and you get the prettiest save the date. Ever!
Mandi + Dan’s Destination Wedding in Costa Rica at Los Suenos Resort, Jaco as seen in Inside Weddings Magazine
I am so thrilled to share with you the gorgeous destination wedding of Mandi and Dan, now featured in the newest issue of Inside Weddings Magazine! Be sure to check out our portfolio page of Mandi + Dan in our wedding stories for more images.
Mandi and Dan were married in one of my all time favorite places on this earth: Costa Rica. I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited this beautiful country many times over the past few years and have made a lot of friends, memories, and participated in a few adventures! When Mandi and Dan got engaged they knew they wanted to have a destination wedding and as an avid surfer, Dan had traveled to Costa Rica on a boys trip a few moons ago and loved the country. While I was there on business, I scouted out some locations for them at Los Suenos Resort. They flew down shortly after and the rest is history!
They were married on the beach overlooking the bay just at sunset, spent some time at the local surf shop owned by my friend Alejandro, and dined with their guests at an amazing house known as Casa Marlin perched ontop of a mountain overlooking the rain forest. Can you say dreamy?
Guests were welcomed to Los Suenos with these amazing out of town bags designed by Mandi’s mom, who owns a company that creates these custom masterpieces. I absolutely adore mine and tote it to the beach whenever I get a chance!
Mandi’s vibrant color story was shades of sunset mixed with greens. I absolutely love the palette her bridesmaids wore in all different colors. Color was everywhere and as it should be; Costa Rica is a colorful country! We couldn’t have pulled this off without an amazing team, who I want to give kudos upon kudos to in our credit reel. Seriously. They are amazing.
Our ceremony was simple: a pretty structure draped with white linen, some benches with comfy cushions, parasols to shield guests from the sun, and THE Roberto Congoman on music. They have a CD. We have it. It is awesome.
We took over Casa Marlin, hid the furniture in the garage, removed the sliding glass doors that went out to the infinity pool and threw a rocking party. Long tables with centerpieces designed by Tony of Datura: A Modern Garden– mostly using foliage (and y’all say you don’t want foliage but look how pretty it is!) found in the houses garden. Yup. All the flowers you see– everywhere– from the bouquets to the centerpieces– Tony collected from the land. That’s what Tony does! He’s a floral magician.
Guests danced under a disco ball, aptly provided by our kick ass DJ who surprised us all with some blazing tunes. At some point in the night folks started diving in the pool fully clothed. We knew that was going to happen!
I have to say that I adore Mandi and Dan and their families. This amazing weekend filled with unique challenges (that only a destination wedding can bring! ever try to get a golf cart up a mountain? I don’t encourage it), lots of laughs, tears of joy, and feeling like you are more than just the wedding planner but an extended member of the family is the reason why I love what I do. I’m grateful to know that I get the opportunity to share in special life moments like this– where family histories are born. What an honor it is to have this job!
And without further adieu, here is the lovely wedding story of Mandi and Dan, as only Carla Ten Eyck can tell through that magic lens of hers. And be SURE to watch the amazing AMAZING AMAZING video by Jim Altieri of Vintage Cinema. Pura Vida! xx

A Modern Black & White Wedding Photoshoot for WellWed Magazine
Be sure to pick up a copy of the newest issue of WellWed Magazine to see the gorgeous layout of this photoshoot in their glossy pages!
The inspiration for this shoot all started after picking up a copy of the coffee table book from Alexander McQueen’s show at the MET, Savage Beauty. I was lucky enough to wander endlessly through this exhibition with my friend Nichole Michel of Coral Pheasant when it came into town, and even at that time, I was largely inspired by McQueen’s Autumn / Winter collection of crisply tailored, fitted, and masculine jackets, skirts, pants and dresses. McQueen once said (and noted by a byline in the book next to images of this exhibit), “I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.”
In tossing ideas around with our team, we set out to create a story of feminine meets masculine. I drafted up a pinterest board (the first time we’ve used one for our shoot!) and the rest is history.
We put together a simple color story of black and white, with shades of grey. Everywhere within the shoot you’ll see tailored lines, crisp typography, and masculine details like fitted jackets and top hats mixed with feminine frill of tulle and jewels. The fashion for this shoot was flawless, and leave it to none other than Beth Chapman to source some of the sickest accessories and custom made pieces, like the couture black suit made by Valentino Tailors. My favorite fashion look of the day is a toss up between our frilly tulle skirted dress with sexy black leather gloves, and the tulle skirt mixed with a tailored jacket– no shirt underneath. I also got to play a bit with my own closet here, bringing in my nude Jimmy Choo pumps and my most favorite and best shoe investment ever: my miu miu glitter booties.
Tony of Datura: A Modern Garden created a myriad of unqiue bouquets– everything from an embellished cane, to a whip (hello!) and some floral handcuffs (whew!). What I love most about Tony is that he’s never afraid to cross over boundaries, create something suggestive but beautiful and completely necessary. To me, he is my real life Alexander McQueen.
Our tablescape might be my favorite yet; simple in color with a lot of textures that don’t seem to compete. I love the sequin black and white chevron linen from La Tavola– the pattern is a sexy take on the stripe, and the sequin gives us our feminine edge. Pinned on top, we boxed out the tablescape with a quilted leather linen from Nuage Designs. Our enormous white containers, smooth with a sensuous shape, held long rectangular boxes trimmed out with black sequin fabric, brimming with white tulips. On the table, we layered plates and things to create dimension; I am especially fond of these curvaceous plates from BHLDN and the “stick” shaped drink stirrers in our white glassware. Even the chairs are sexy, with their hard lines and grey color. At the last minute we decided they needed a pop, so Tony attached some orchids.
Nichole of Coral Pheasant created a luxurious paper story complete with patent leather like printing. Everything about this paper story is sleek, simple, sexy and is an attribute to how delicious typography really is!
And of course, who else could shoot this madness except the effervescent Carla Ten Eyck and company? And don’t forget to peep the behind-the-scenes video by none other than Jim Altieri at the end, with interviews from the designers themselves!

Paper Crush: Britt & Peter’s Save the Dates
We are totally crushing on our clients’ paper stories as of late, largely in part to the talented genius of Nichole Michel at Coral Pheasant Stationery + Design. She happens to be responsible for about 99% of our clients invitation stories, including this boozy save the date for Britt and Peter, who were married at Jonathan Edwards Winery this past September. They wanted something fun to send their guests, most of which were traveling from far and wide to attend their destination wedding on the Connecticut Shoreline. Nichole dreamed up this fun save the date with a red wine stain and some cheeky language. Love!
A Jubilee Event: Rachel & Adam’s Whimsical, Summer Wedding at The Barns at Wesleyan Hills in Middletown, CT
On a cool December afternoon what’s better than reliving this fun, rustic and cheerful wedding of Rachel and Adam from this past June? We loved working with them alongside Rachel’s dotting parents on this gorgeous yellow, ivory and green wedding perfectly placed in The Barns at Wesleyan Hills. They had an absolutely gorgeous day for their late morning Jewish ceremony overlooking the giant willow tree at The Barns.
Some of my favorite details are the day are the subtle infusion of lace– everywhere from Rachel’s gorgeous Jim Hjelm gown, to the antique lace cloth that hung above them on the chuppah, to the lace wrapping around each napkin. Feminane, soft and with a bit of texture, it was the perfect compliment to the rest of their design. Coral Pheasant Stationery + Design created a truly unique invitation suite starting with wooden save the dates that had their intials and a heart engraved along with the date. For the invitations themselves, she created little wooden heart tags which were tied with gold and ivory twine, laced around a band of lace. Love! My favorite little detail was the wooden tags attached to the heart with Rachel and Adam’s wedding website engraved on them.
The reception was gorgeous with tan linens, rattan chargers, vintage plates, pretty yellow napkins and the most beautiful yellow, green and ivory centerpieces by Blush Floral Design in large wooden boxes. The tables were overflowing with garden roses, sunflowers with their petals plucked (the perfect addition of green and brown!), ranunculous and crespidia. Each place setting had a sprig of rosemary and a menu card printed on card stock that looked like wood grain.
Guests danced the afternoon away to my new favorite band, like, ever The Rhythm Shop, who literally couldn’t have been more perfect. A Little Imagination Cakes‘s took inspiration from our save the date and created the cutest most delicious cupcakes you’ve ever seen, displayed on tree trunks and wooden circles. Guests took hope chocolate covered oreos (Rachel’s favorite!) in pretty kraft paper boxes.
A big thank you to Carla Ten Eyck and Buzz Media Company for capture the still and motion photography for the day!
