We adore Los Suenos Resort– and we especially love these amazing luxury homes from Stay in Costa Rica (a property management company that represents these gorgeous homes!). Mandi and Dan had an incredible wedding at one of these multi-million dollar beauts overlooking the bay– and it all started because of this amazing editorial fashion shoot we did one year prior! We have so many amazing images from this trip to share with you– but first up is our fashion shoot at Puesta Del Sol, Villa Artiv, and the beautiful Casa Marlin.

Our inspiration for this fashion shoot came from the luxury properties available at Stay in Costa Rica. Beth Chapman, stylist and owner of The White Dress by the shore wanted to create a luxurious, dramatic and romantic look for brides having a destination wedding. The natural landscape of Costa Rica and Los Suenos resort provided us with the majority of the flowers used in the bouquets, designed by Datura: A Modern Garden. Our fashion shoot mixes both a tropical feel and a modern, sophisticated and decadent direction.

The gowns and accessories were shot in the most amazing locations– from the multi-million dollar spanish influenced home of Puesta Del Sol with breathtaking views of the rainforest and three different pays that surround Los Suenos Resort to the modern and swanky digs at Villa Artiv with it’s vintage Louis Vuitton trunk and Pucci chair. All three of these luxurious properties are available for not only accommodations, but also for amazing wedding receptions and ceremonies!

A special shout out to my girl, Carla Ten Eyck, who is by far filled with the most talent I have ever seen. I am not even sure how she is able to make everything and everyone so beautiful, but by God, she does it every time!!!

On Monday I had the honor of accompanying Beth Chapman and her talented team to New York to meet talented designer Amsale Aberra and her husband, Neil Brown, at their studio.

Amsale is one of the few design houses that designs and produces all of their gowns in-house in New York.  Amsale Aberra launched her signature bridal collection in the late 80’s after getting married herself and recognizing the need for fashionable, sophisticated and timeless gowns.   The Amsale brand now also manufactures and designs the Christos and Kenneth Pool collections.

We received a behind-the-scenes tour of the showroom and production areas and were able to witness patterns being made, gowns being cut and sewn, beaders hand-sewing crystals one by one onto gowns and most importantly, we got a sneak peak on some of the new designs that will be gracing the runway in April!

During our visit, we learned that an individual pattern is made for every single gown that is produced.  It was amazing to watch the staff in pristine white coats draping and sewing each gown one at a time- each one, a unique masterpiece.

The highlight of our day was meeting the talented designer behind the brand, Amsale Aberra.  She spoke with us in depth about her vision for creating modern, elegant gowns.  She said that she hates to be asked about what the current trends are.  She does not believe in trends.  She believes in creating gowns that are timeless and that a bride can confidently look back on in 10, 20 or 50 years and still love!  She gave us a sneak peak at some of the stunning creations that she is working on for her latest collection and also gave us a glimpse into her design process.

After our tour, we were treated to a delicious Italian meal with Amsale, her husband Neil and our sales rep, Saundra, at Amsale’s favorite restaurant!

We had the amazing opportunity of working with Connecticut based designer Modern Trousseau, using all their gowns to create a photoshoot inspired by the Classic Bride. In looking for locations, I had the idea to feature the historic and unique properties in Hartford, including The Society Room, The Old State House, The Mark Twain House, The Gershon Fox Room, Hartford City Hall and Elizabeth Park. Each backdrop served as it’s own unique inspiration– guiding Beth Chapman of The White Dress by the shore and Tony Palmieri of Datura: A Modern Garden in choosing fashion and floral to compliment each look! Equally exciting was to see images from our shoot used in Modern Trousseau’s national ad campaign in magazines such as Martha Stewart Weddings and Town & Country Weddings.

Vintage Cinema for the behind-the-scenes video, Beth Chapman and her team at The White Dress by the shore for the fashion and styling, Dana Bartone & Company for their two days of tireless beauty, Tony Palmieri and his team of assistants at Datura: A Modern Garden for creating our floral art, and Modern Trousseau for being the muse of our shoot!

Our first look was shot in front of the Old State House on Main Street in Hartford and inside the Gershon Fox Room, featuring Modern Trousseau’s Pearl Gown from their Fall 2011 collection, white leather gloves by Carolina Amato, jewels by Haute Bride including square stud earrings, diamond cuff and tiara, necklace by DK Designs and vintage black 1936 Buick by Carriage Limo. Datura: A Modern Garden decorated our vintage car and created the stunning white bouquet.

Our second look featured Gown the Savannah gown by Modern Trousseau as part of their Fall 2011 collection with black satin gloves from Carolina Amato. Earrings are by Tejani, diamond cuffs by Haute Bride, large cocktail ring from Kate Spade New York, and black tulle headpiece by Satya Twena. We shot in front of the historic vault at The Society Room, a bank turned wedding venue on Pratt Street in Hartford. The colorful bouquet and floral decor was created by Datura: A Modern Garden.

One look that didn’t make the magazine was The Kennedy Gown by Modern Trousseau for their Fall 2011 collection, which inspired our third look at The Old State House on Main Street in Hartford. I absolutely adore this space– with it’s high ceilings, white wooden walls and oversized gold chandelier. The back jewels of the gown are by aquinnah jewelry with earrings by Haute Bride. Tony from Datura: A Modern Garden created a bouquet inspired by the Royal Wedding.

The fourth look is Modern Trousseau’s Larissa Gown for their Fall 2011 collection. Our bride also wore a fox trimmed fur jacket, also by Modern Trousseau with earrings by Haute Bride, bouquet from Datura: A Modern Garden, and brooch from The White Dress by the shore.

Our fifth look has to be my favorite. When we got word we could shoot inside Hartford City Hall I knew I wanted to do a throw back, city hall style wedding. Modern Trousseau’s short lace Daphne dress proved to be the perfect dress for this sexy and sweet look. Our pillbox cap with cage veil and feather details is from the millner Bijou Van Ness with pearl earring from The White Dress by the shore. I absolutely LOVE the nude shoes from Badgley Mischka and the simple bouquet from Datura: A Modern Garden. Our groom’s attire is from the impeccable male clothiers at Valentino Tailors.

Our sixth look was at the historic Mark Twain House– whose history you simply must read! It’s an incredible Hartford landmark and one our state is so proud to have. A 20′s feel was the fashion direction that Beth Chapman chose for this look, inspired by the gorgeous feather trimmed cloche from Bijou Van Ness. Our bride wore long satin ivory gloves by Carolina Amato, Modern Trousseau’s Faye gown with a feather brooched belt and earring from from Haute Bride. The stunning round bouquet is by Datura: A Modern Garden.

Our final look couldn’t have been timed more perfectly for the blooming trees of Elizabeth Park, Connecticut’s famous 100 year old rose garden in Hartford. Elizabeth Park is such a magical place, especially during the spring and summer months. The dogwood and lilac trees couldn’t have been more of a perfect backdrop to the gorgeous Piper gown from Modern Trousseau’s Fall 2011 line. I absolutely love the colorful necklace from Haute Bride and sheer white wrist length gloves from Carolina Amato. Tony from Datura: A Modern Garden created all the unique floral decor, including the peony bouquet, floral ring bearer bowl, floral parasol and the GORGEOUS floral and greenery garland modeled by our bride!

We loved our final appointment of bridal market at Modern Trousseau’s new showroom in New York. Beth Chapman had already previewed the collection before it had hit NYC and raved about Callie’s stunning designs. They did not disappoint! Her newest collection includes some amazing lace gowns along with a fun and flirty line “before there was long.” Be sure to stay tuned to The White Dress by the shore’s blog for complete fashion updates from market!

We’re always so grateful to Martha Stewart Weddings and Darcy Miller for hosting an incredible party the last night of bridal market. After so much running around, our tired feet and minds need to cut loose! We had a great time at their offices with friends from The White Dress by the shore, Coral Pheasant Stationery + Design, Bliss Event Design, Weddings by Socialites, Impressions Photography, 14 Stories, Monumental Designs, Lyndsey Hamilton Events, Ceci New York, Lela New York, Ashley Baber Weddings, Annie Lee, and many more! It was a treat to meet Martha again this year, too.

We also attend a fabulous gala at The New York Public Library hosted by The Knot. Big thanks to Carley for a spectacular and fun night!

We had a smashing time and got to catch up with our industry friends and make new ones along the way. Here are some highlights from our weekend, including our favorite gowns (some soon to be available at TWD), moments, and images from the Martha Stewart Weddings party and The Knot Gala!

My weekend started off at the Amsale runway show, where she showed gowns from her newest collection. The runway show was a modern take on the classics (even down to the music!). Her maids walked down the runway first in all Jersey fabric in clean silhouettes, some with one shoulder. Her bridal collection had a lot of tulle skirts with with satin bodices. You can see all the dresses that walked down the runway here.

We visited one of my favorite new lines, Ivy & Aster, known for their sweet and feminine style. They also make the cutest bridesmaids dresses that you’d be destined to wear again and again! You can see their full Fall 2012 line here.

It’s totally true: we do heart Euro designer David Fielden– and what a pleasure it was to meet him and have him show us his 2012 Fall collection! His avant-garde style and bold use of textures, fabrics and cuts makes his line completely unique. One of our favorite looks was a backless white jumpsuit dress alternative– so 70′s and truly for the bride who wants something amazing and different! You can see some of his 2012 line here and his Milan runway show below… I STRONGLY encourage you to watch the whole thing. The finale is worth the wait!

Truth be told, I’ve been hard core rockin’ a blue stripe with sequin and anything sparkley for some time. I love the idea of dressing up something that otherwise would be consider super casual. I’m on a mission to design a nautical glam wedding– with lots of glitter and sparkle! The key to achieving this look is the right balance between casual and dressed up. For daytime, I love the sequin blue and white striped shirt paired with some jeans and glitter ballet flats. For evening, the sequin skirt paired with a blue and white striped shirt is perfect. Dress it up with some understated heals, an over-the-top sequin clutch, and bold red lips. A big “installation” of crystal bracelets going up your forearm would look amazing!

Translate this into a wedding by using blue and white striped linens with glitter and sparkle accent pieces if you want to be on the more casual side. For an evening wedding, go heavy on the glitz by using sequin linens and nautical details in your napkin, paper story, food, and unique decor ideas.

I have to agree with her– Kate will more than likely wear something classic and conservative, which is not necessary in the same breath as her own style. She is young, upbeat, and tends to gravitate toward modern and fitted silhouettes. So, the question begs– what will she wear on Friday?

As Beth wrote (and we agree), “I felt it imperative that Kate don some sort of sleeve for her Westminster Abbey ceremony. The venue is a 1,000 year old church, where kings and queens are crowned. In respect of tradition, I feel that the coverage is necessary. My hope is that the silhouette that she selects- albeit traditional- will have some shape in the skirt to show off her fabulous figure!” I do agree with Beth that her dress ought to have sleeves– whether they are part of a short jacket she wears and can later remove– or constructed into the gown.

And while the dress that she wears to Westminster Abbey will most certainly have a conservative feel, we can only imagine what she’ll change into for that evening’s intimate dinner party! This is where we expect Kate’s true style to shine, and perhaps, she’ll dawn something more slim and formfitting.

I’ve never been a huge fan of garters– I’ve gotta admit. Mostly because I think their designs are just flat out cheesy. Polyester strapped to my thigh? No thanks. But these garters by florrie mitton… well, they single handedly made me change my mind all together! The UK based designer has created handmade works of art with vintage finds, lace, and fine silks. You must check out their etsy store to see more of their custom designs. It’s just pretty, pretty, pretty.

On Sunday I attended a great party put on by White Dress by the Shore and several vendors who’ve moved into wedding row. One of my absolute favorites is Beneath the Gown, a fabulous company developed by master seamstress of White Dress by the Shore, Josie. Beneath the Gown is a bridal lingerie boutique presenting an exquisite collection of exclusive designer lingerie labels featuring french European couture fine laces and hand-made silks perfect for honeymoon, special events or everyday. Josie’s services include complimentary, professional bra fittings and in-house custom design service where we can customize or custom create bustiers, night gowns, and wedding gowns.

I have to admit — I was doing a lot of window shopping for myself while I was in Josie’s beautiful shop. She had some of the most delicate and stunning pieces of lingerie I’ve ever seen. I love the custom aspect too. In our chat we talked about how we can take a piece of my wedding gown and incorporate it into a custom piece of lingerie. Amazing!! I would love to be able to slip into something special that has elements of my wedding gown.

New York based designer Yoo Lee emailed me to introduce her amazing bridal line, Saja. I absolutely feel IN LOVE with these gorgeous, ethereal and and flowy gowns. LOVE the bead work on some and the simplicity of them all. All the bridal gowns in Lee’s line are also affordable and attainable — at or under $1,000 a piece. Incredible!!!

I was introduced to Stella & Dot Jewelry and I really LOVE their designs and styles. Their pieces are bold and fashionable. They’d look fabulous on a bridal party – and are perfect for a bride who wants to infuse some of her daily personal style into her look! I love the big necklace “bibs” (as they’re dubbed) especially. It is such a dramatic look!

Pearls are ultimately my favorite jewelry on a bride, with bling being second. I really love colored pearls (I try to wear them as often as possible) and some big colors for spring are yellow, pink (papaya especially), and turquoise.

I came across bonzie and instantly fell in love with their style. I knew I wanted something to change my look from ceremony to reception and their rococco antique stained tulle wrap was perfect! bonzie is an independant fashion designer located in Ireland. They often using “upcycled clothing, thrifted trinkets and vintage inspired fabric in an artful blend of tattered chic neo-victorian, steampunk and deconstructed elements!” bonzie is best known for their bridal and fashion bolero’s, wraps, jackets, corsets, and skirts (yes, skirts!!)

Here are some of my new favorites from their collection… they are definitely for the bride who wants to bring a fun fashion element to her bridal look. Be daring!

Silk gazar Channing gown… I love the black ribbon! Although I think it could be accentuated even better with something by Emerson made.




Gwen dress… has jcrew heeded my call for a short wedding dress? Kind of, but not really. This will have to do! I love this. It’s very winter to me with the layers of chiffon, organza and soft French tulle, and a hand-stitched collage of glass beads, sequins and feathers. But for $2,000 you’d have to bury me in it.




and last but not least, my favorite accessories! Love the shoes, but love the jewels more. I don’t really like a heavy shoe with a bridal gown so there wasn’t much to choose from with fall on the horizon.

I love etsy because it supports local and national small businesses, artists, and craftsman and in my book, those are the best businesses to buy from!

I realized that I didn’t have a hankie to carry with me down the aisle. Neither of my grandmothers had hankies to loan and my mother didn’t have anything either, so I decided to purchase my own heirloom. I came across this really beautiful hankie from Brass Paper Clip which specialized in vintage items for brides. They have so many cute vintage purses, gloves, hankies, flowers…. heaven! I purchased a beautiful Schiffli Lace hankie and received it yesterday. The one thing that I absolutely love about most etsy.com‘s shops is how personable and detail-minded the owners are — just look at how she packaged the hankie that I bought!

I hadn’t heard of the company before our meet and greet, but the concept behind the company has been around for awhile. Adorn Brides lends fabulous jewels to brides for their wedding day and they are the only company I know of that deals exclusively in wedding jewelry rental. Their collection is gorgeous and I got to try on one of their $20,000 vintage diamond bracelets! The representatives of Adorn also mentioned that they do buy specialty pieces for brides and are not limited to their current inventory. Isn’t that fabulous? They do carry a wide variety of styles but I love that they will purchase jewelry on a brides behalf.

I really love the classic silhouettes of screen sirens past, and fully believe that it is every woman’s right to channel Rita Hayworth or Marylin Monroe on her wedding day! Some elements you should look for in a gown if you are planning an old hollywood based soiree are sweet-heart necklines with mermaid, drop-waist, and curve accentuating gowns. Stick with satin, Silk-charmeuse and Chantilly lace. Delicate bead work and crystals are also a signature component of this style. I also recommend a faux fur or feather shawl to add an extra bit of glam!

Your Bridal Clutch

I think your bridal clutch is a chic way of adding something blue into your day. I love this satin fluer clutch from J. Crew. It also comes in a variety of other colors, including white, for all you traditional gals.

Your Bridal Shoe

I’m a huge fan of brides wearing colored shoes on their wedding day. It shows off a bit more of your personality, and the chances that you’ll wear the pricey shoe again? Pretty good. I love this blue shoe from Nine West, especially the jewel embellishment and the ruffle on the top. It reminds me of the crumb catchers that are gracing the 2008/2009 bridal gown collections. So pretty!

Blue Handkerchief

This detail is probably my all time favorite. I love the personalized blue stitching on this vintage handkerchief by stichberry on Etsy.com. The best part? It’s only $13!

Blue Rosary Beads

So many brides carry rosary beads with them on their special day. If you don’t have a rosary that is sentimental to you or your family, consider carrying the one above by BeadsofHeaven. You can carry them with you to the alter by hand, tucked in your dress, or like our bride Michelle who had her rosary wrapped around her bridal bouquet.

Blue Gown Embelishments

With the right dress, a little splash of color makes all the difference. I love this dress by Monique Lhuillier. Her Spring 2009 collection is simply gorgeous!

Blue Jewels

Another one of my favorite picks: choosing to wear a blue piece of jewelry on your big day. This broach, from Tiffany, is the perfect blue accessory. Also consider blue inspired earrings, a necklace, or bracelet.
