For several months we’ve been planning a feminine meets masculine inspired photoshoot after seeing the most recent looks at NYFW. I absolutely love this look and have been dying to do something inspired by Alexander McQueen’s after seeing the Savage Beauty exhibit at the MET in 2011. I fell in love with his expert tailoring and fall / winter collection of 1998-99 for Givenchy! Our feminine meets masculine look can be easily achieved in styling your wedding or next event; think about clean, tailored lines mixed with textures that are remarkably feminine. For a dress– a structured bodice with a romantic tulle skirt; cleanly designed tables using interesting textures like leather, mixed with ruffled flowers like peonies, garden roses and ranunculus; notably masculine drinks like scotches and whiskey served in feminine shaped glassware. To me, determining the balance between masculine and feminine is a fun and exciting challenge. I can’t wait to show you what we have in store for the newest issue of WellWed Magazine, on newsstands soon!

I don’t know what it is about polka dots but there isn’t a polka dot pattern that I don’t love! Maybe it derives from our constant fascination by Kate Spade and her easy-to-love designs and ensembles, or maybe it’s my love for Roy Lichtenstein’s notorious pop art. I find them to be so fun and versatile-they can be preppy, charming, sophisticated, playful, and downright glamorous! If I can find a way to wear them or incorporate them, I will!

A few weeks ago I told Nichole from Coral Pheasant that I was fairly confident I single handily re-energized the chevron revolution on pinterest. She laughed and reminded me that I wasn’t that popular. In all seriousness, there seems to be a chevronaissance as the pattern has come up everywhere! I love it oh-so-very-much as it’s a modern take on a classic stripe. You can incorporate chevron into your wedding fairly easy, but just be careful that you don’t overdo it. I recommend using it in interesting and unique ways with blocks of vibrant colors and another pattern. Xo!

This past weekend was glorious! With a well deserved weekend off, I caught up on many important things: sex and the city episodes, online shopping which involved a major chloe purchase, and my netflix wishlist which included Valentino: The Last Emperor. Watching Mr. Valentino prepare for his 45th Anniversary collection and retirement was riveting– and it also reminded me that I’ve been straight up sweatin’ the color red.I’ve managed to purchase a killer red jacket from j.crew (along with a bright red dress and sweet red pumps… opps). I’ve been rockin’ my  favorite red mac lipstick for a while too. What is it about the color red that’s got me switching out the pink from my wardrobe? I think the reason why I love it most is it exudes confidence.

Considering refreshing your hangars with some new, vibrant red pieces. It’s a big color this year at j.crew and kate spade. My favorite way to wear red is to wear it from head to toe. Red dress? Check. Red jacket? Check. Red shoes, lips, belt and bag? Che-ck! Wearing all one color can be really dramatic and bold. I’d die to design an all red event with neutral touches! Someday I might be able to add the ultimate red piece to my collection: a red valentino. A girl can dream, right?

It’s safe to say that I’m basically nuts about coral right now. Coral lipstick? Check. Coral pants? Check. Coral Chloe bag? Cheeeeccckk! What I love even more about Coral is pairing it with a super neutral color story– crisp khaki colors, ivories, whites, shades of grey. It makes that one burst of color pop even more. My ultimate fav? Skinny khaki trousers, crisp white collared shirt, gold accessories with pop of coral lipstick. A simple but effective accessory! I’m also crushin’ on coral + animal prints. Coral meets leopard print and fur? Hi. This leads me to my next conclusion: coral also isn’t just for summer. Brights are going to be very popular this fall– especially paired with neutrals. So dust off your tweed skirt and pair it with that amazing coral cardigan you’ve been sporting all summer.

So, how can you incorporate this same coral aesthetic into your event? Start with a neutral backdrop and build in subtle coral accents like khaki bridesmaids dresses with gold jewels and coral bouquets; oyster linens with a coral napkin and simple coral floral arrangements; ivory crane with gold emboss invitations and a coral envelope. Truth be told, I’ve been hard core rockin’ a blue stripe with sequin and anything sparkley for some time. I love the idea of dressing up something that otherwise would be consider super casual. I’m on a mission to design a nautical glam wedding– with lots of glitter and sparkle! The key to achieving this look is the right balance between casual and dressed up. For daytime, I love the sequin blue and white striped shirt paired with some jeans and glitter ballet flats. For evening, the sequin skirt paired with a blue and white striped shirt is perfect. Dress it up with some understated heals, an over-the-top sequin clutch, and bold red lips. A big “installation” of crystal bracelets going up your forearm would look amazing!

Translate this into a wedding by using blue and white striped linens with glitter and sparkle accent pieces if you want to be on the more casual side. For an evening wedding, go heavy on the glitz by using sequin linens and nautical details in your napkin, paper story, food, and unique decor ideas.

However, I take a step back and realize that rain can provide us with a hint of fun, maybe even excitement. No, I’m not suffering from cabin fever; I’m just finding the artistic side of Mother Nature. It has been a ongoing joke throughout the creative photo shoots we have put together that our time has come to an end when the rain begins. Rain has snuck up on us during our time in New Orleans and Costa Rica–both trips, as well as a few other adventures. At the moment you’re thinking about all the things you have to scramble and salvage, but when all is said and done and you take a look at those images, you see the extraordinary beauty underlined by those fallen drops.

So today I feel inspired by the rain. Join me with your stylish rain boots and enjoy this warm weather that is right around the corner!

Costa Rica is an amazing country to have your destination wedding! Rich in culture, nature, and the good life, Costa Rica has become one of my favorite places in the world. The air is clean, the water clear, the rain forests dense with colorful vegetation and animals. Having been to Costa Rica twice last year, I was really inspired by the surrounding nature and Anthropologie’s newest catalog. Don’t they go hand-in-hand? The 70’s vibe is so stylin’ right now and I just love mixing patterns. I feel like sometimes people get nervous mixing patterns, and while you need to do it well in order for it to work, the end result has a major style impact! The best piece of advice in mixing patterns is to make sure one element is cohesive— color. If you can match tonality of color your patterns can range in whatever style and design you choose!

This board oozes an element of quirkiness and takes advantage of all that Costa Rica has to offer. I never advocate fighting with natural elements— you should embrace them! We have a lot of elements happening here, but a repeat of color and style. I love the vintage travel posters, the gorgeous anthropologie painting with the suitcase and shoes (the muse for this board!) and that amazing photograph of the Costa Rican rain forest.

Since our trips to Costa Rica have resulted in a incredible collection of work, we’re going to be showcasing our images by Carla Ten Eyck and her team on the first level of The White Dress by the shore. Our friend Jim Altieri from Vintage Cinema will also be showcasing his recent work from our November shoot as well. Our event is going to explore some of the most beautiful and romantic destinations for your wedding. This week, we’re featuring the island of Capri located on the Almalfi Coast in Italy. This is, hands down, one of my favorite coast lines in the world. When I think of Capri I’m reminded of food, fashion, and architecture. Can’t you see yourself hand-in-hand walking the streets in a mini linen shift dress, long hair and a big blue floppy sun hat? Well, I can!

With it’s turquoise coast line, rich italian food, rocky cliffs, windy streets, gorgeous boats, local artisans and diverse history it is an amazing location for a destination wedding! We can’t wait to share with you our mini Capri-inspired wedding at our Destination Weddings Event, but in the mean time, here is our inspiration board…

Purely romantic, carefree and colorful, our board was inspired by the natural landscape of Capri– the interesting colors and textures– along with the dreamy ocean views. You don’t have to be in Capri to evoke the ambiance and atmosphere there– bring in this color palette along with diverse patterns, smooth finishes and rough textures. Build a menu around regional Almalfi Coast dishes, robust with fishes, lemon (!), handmade pasta, cheeses, and fresh local vegetables. And of course, wine! Be inspired by their beautiful architecture with its greco-roman curved arches, stucco finishes and tiled floors. Think about the narrow windy streets, fresh food markets, local textile artisans, little piazza’s and houses built into the cliff side.

While away our fun, spring inspired tablescape we created at The Society Room bridal show was featured on Style Me Pretty! I thought there was no better time than to share this with you know as Spring is in full swing. We shared an awesome booth space with the incredibly talented Datura: A Modern Garden and Carla Ten Eyck Photography. Tony and I collaborated on this fun and whimsical set up with touches of pink, gold, and ivory.

Have I ever mentioned that Tony and Cat from Datura: A Modern Garden are complete geniuses? They created all the floral decor for our booth– including the branch and greens centerpiece “umbrella” that rained beautiful purple orchids down onto our tablescape. Gorg!! I love our little touches of cucumber water on the table and lemonade and apricot squares on the sweet table. We were inspired by spring and wanted to creative a festive garden party inside.

We had an amazing dress on display by Melissa Sweet, available at The White Dress by the Shore.

Beautiful California wine country and weddings are like peanut butter and jelly — they just make sense. Who wouldn’t want to get married amidst the sprawling green mountainside, on the cusp of the pacific ocean? Us Connecticut girls with a love of grape vines and rolling symmetrical hills are certainly disappointed when we look around at our landscape and see just the opposite. Well, that isn’t entirely true: you just need to know where to look!

My inspiration for this board came out of my own love for wine country weddings. In Connecticut, that can seem near impossible, but we’re fortunate in having the most gorgeous of locations, Jonathan Edwards Winery. Located in North Stonington, the views here are amazing. You just have to see it for yourself!

The Color Palate

I chose Pear and Canary because I love the way green and yellow look together. Does anyone remember Pottery Barn’s catalogs from last year, with all those fabulous green and yellow livingscapes? I literally thought about redesigning my house! The colors together are so fresh and can be whimsical, romantic, or tailored and preppy. I think our inspiration board incorporates a little of each. I also included the colors of Crisp Linen to break up the boldness of the green and yellow. The color of Espresso Brown is also just so complimentary of all three others and helps add some rustic wood elements to the design in branches or wooden tables.

Another reason why I love this palate is it is cross-seasonal. While it is fabulous in Spring and Summer, it can work equally as well in Fall and Winter. And while you may not be able to have a fabulous tented fete in the dead of January at a winery, you could have a beautiful indoor affair at one of the local renovated Barns in Connecticut and it would have the same effect!

I think this is one of my favorite inspiration boards to date. I try to not just slap pictures together, but put genuine thought into each element and how it plays off one another. Its like building a mini wedding. My only regret is the space isn’t larger to fit MORE ideas and inspiration.

Who knew I was so inspired by shoes? This color palate and inspiration board was inspired by a pair of gorgeous Badgley Mishka heels that I first saw in the new Winter issue of Instyle Weddings. Of course I immediately ordered a pair (which I plan on wearing to our engagement shoot!) and I’m eagerly awaiting their arrival. In the meantime, I thought I’d design a fabulously romantic pink design board in honor of all their beauty!

I didn’t have to look far for the perfect colors. The Pantone Spring color report, published a few months ago, has some amazing colors for 2009. Among them are these pretty pinks named Salmon Rose and Rose Dust. I added my own color of Contessa to round out our color palate.

I think our inspiration board has a preppy and whimiscal feel to it. I love the ruffles and fabric especially. I wish I could have found a wedding cake that incorporated ruffled fondant in shades of pink. Wouldn’t that have been so pretty? I really picture this wedding outside, overlooking the Connecticut countryside.

I was inspired to do this board by an email I received from Crate & Barrel last month, advertising some of their new fall products! I saw these two images and immediately loved the color combination. I love purple, pumpkin (although this color is officially named “Tenne”) and the color of pear together. It is so fall festive and effortless. I think food provides a lot of color palates that we must consider. I remember watching an episode of Trading Spaces MANY years ago where Genevieve Porter did a room inspired by a cup of miso soup. I always admired and understood her for that, and I try to find inspiration in the same way: everyday life and the unexpected.

This color palate really asked for a country-style wedding. I could see it implemented at Candlelight Farms Inn, Tyrone Farm, The Webb Barn, or Wickham Park. Of course, it would also be gorgeous at a private estate wedding! There are so many fun elements that I wanted to include but I just didn’t have the space. So, here is to what is left of our fall foliage!

The Color Palate

I was inspired by the Kate Hudson W Magazine cover, but lets face it, this color combination is extremely popular right now! Open any bridal magazine or decor magazine and you are sure to see some type of variation of these colors. Bridal and event bloggers have also regularly featured their take on this color scheme. Some of my favorites? Red Details @ Elizabeth Ann Designs Blog, Raspberry & Blue @ Polka Dot Bride.com, and Color Palate Contest Entry @ Style Me Pretty.com.

The elements I love most in the inspiration board below are the delicious alternative to a wedding cake, the height defying croquembouche dusted in chocolate. They almost look like truffles, don’t they? I also love the vintage typewriter I found, which you could use to have your guests type a message for your guestbook, verses signing their names (you could frame all their signatures, words of wisdom and quotes in your home). Lastly, I love the use of cranberries as vase fillers. You can use them in a variety of ways for decor with this color scheme. You can pop them into your champagne flutes which will add a little color to your toast. Also, string them and use them along with greenery for garland swagged entry ways, church doors, or chair backs. Use them as decor on your passed appetizer trays or stations. The possibilities are endless!

Enjoy the board. I’m off to prepare for a dinner party we are having with friends. No wedding this weekend, which means I can relax and have a glass of wine!

I came up with a fun palate based on the color combo in the pillow’s design. The main colors featured are pesto, periwinkle gray, and irish coffee with a splash of “mandy.” My inspiration board turned out to be a little rustic with a lot of romance. My favorite elements are the super chic chandeliers hung from wooden beams, the antique wooden box used as table numbers, and the old medicine bottles used as vases (…you know me!). I was also inspired by the new Williams Sonoma home collection (I got the magazine in the mail the other day… to die for!), especially the Rosemary and Olive wreath featured on their website. Wreaths are such an intimate and unexpected touch to wedding décor, don’t you think? I love using wreaths on church or venue doors, on the back of chairs, or to dress up a drab table. The Rosemary and Olive wreath theme was carried over into the back of the chairs as garland. Beautiful! I hope you enjoy it.

What I love is how classic the colors are with a modern spin. We’ve seen “withered rose” (maybe known as the dreaded ’80s color mauve?), red, and the color of champagne before… but it is the subtle undertones in these colors that makes them different from the shades we’re use to.

Another thing I love is that it isn’t overly fall. I love themed weddings and I’m all for it, but some of us also like to invoke the feeling of fall without having leaves, bare trees, burnt oranges and pumpkins scattered about our decor. This color palate is a very subtle way to bring about that fall atmosphere for your guests to enjoy. From the bouquets, to the tablescapes, favors, bridesmaid dresses, unique details, cake and invitations – it’s all covered. Now, on to the inspiration board!
