While our ceremony was special (Keith’s parents were married at the same church, and the priest married my parents years earlier) I didn’t neglect the very important party that followed. I picked The New Haven Lawn Club even before I stepped foot inside. I knew from looking at pictures that it was everything I wanted in a wedding venue. Those chandeliers! The black and white floors! The tiled mirror in the ballroom! It was the second time in my life that I experienced love at first sight.

The venue set the tone for the design: Elegant and romantic with vintage touches. I settled on a color palette of blush, apricot and champagne. I wanted the room to be decorated in soft, monochromatic tones and accented with gold and ivory. Elisabeth from Blush Floral Design created the beyond gorgeous florals for the day. She used lots of lush blooms like garden roses, peonies, ranunculus and sweet peas. I wanted to display the centerpieces in something different so my mom and I collected vintage cut glass cake stands. We found them in all shapes and sizes and I loved how they made each table look just a little bit different.

Keith and I knew we didn’t want a traditional wedding cake, so we decided to have eight! Sweet Maria’s in Waterbury helped us bring our vision to life–a cake buffet featuring confections in flavors like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Orange Creamsicle and Heath Bar Crunch. This quickly became my favorite detail from the day. Not only did it look pretty, our guests loved having so many flavors to choose from.

While our wedding design evolved mostly around cake, our lives are really ruled by pizza–mainly pizza from Pepe’s in New Haven. Since it’s our favorite Friday night dinner we decided it was the perfect location for pictures. Cynthia Brown got some amazing shots of us outside our favorite restaurant and throughout the entire day. Have a look!

When the couple arrived, they were tucked away inside the Still River Cafe, where they were able to overlook through the restaurant’s panoramic window at their guests arriving. The ceremony took place in the corner of the lush lawn that surrounded the Cafe, where guests observed on rustic benches adorned with shepherd’s hooks, overflowing with loosely arranged flowers by Azaela Floral Design. Instead of traditional vows, Kelly and Paolo recited Dr. Seuss’s wedding vows, in which Paolo promised, “Yes, I will have, and I will hold, just as I have at this time told. Yes, I will love her all my life as now I take her as my wife” and Kelly pledged, “Yes, I will love for my whole life. Yes, I will happily be his wife!”

They recessed down the aisle to the jubilant sound of kazoos, followed by their guests to enjoy some sweet lemonade before heading inside. Their dog Bella made an appearance and could not sit still, she was so excited! Past the vintage bicycle with hydrangeas filling the basket and up the candle-lit steps, the couple and guests enjoyed an intimate reception. Christine from Azalea Floral Design really dressed up the cafe with beautiful greenery wrapped around the ceiling beams and gorgeous mini-arrangements of roses and delicate flowers in vintage medicine bottles that perfectly complimented the love letters and vintage books that were a favorite possession to both the bride and groom. Joseph Kiernan and his band performed some light music above in the loft while the wedding party dined on their choice of fresh oysters, tender beef, delicately flavored stuffed mushrooms, and savory rabbit in between sips of wine. In lieu of cake, the couple chose to treat their guests to chocolate cupcakes with a chocolate ganache frosting, cleverly decorated with orange sugar flowers. Guests enjoyed their treats as well as their favors, loaves of chocolate cake–Kelly’s favorite recipe! It was such a beautiful wedding, filled with so many family members and love, that it was hard for everyone to leave at the end of the night!

Rose and David are one of those couples that you just know were destined to meet and get married. With 80 of their closest friends surrounding them, they were joined in a loving ceremony underneath the big tree at The Webb Barn in mid-june. Their ceremony was a mixture of their unique backgrounds and traditions they love. Guests arrived at The Webb Barn in Wethersfield to the waving Scottish flag and ambient sound of bag pipes. Emily’s Catering was on site with servings of refreshing flavored water and juices as guests mingled near the wooden benches. Rose floated down the rose petal aisle, escorted by her mom and dad, to the most amazing string arrangement of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Their program was an inspired design like old concert programs that had a cheeky spin on the ceremony. Rose made paper cones, filled with dried rose petals, that guests tossed as they recessed up the aisle.

Rose and David worked on so many projects themselves, from their light and airy tissue poms that floated above the dance floor to the amazing scotch bar that entertained guests all night long. When I first met with Rose she said, “I want the barn to feel like the Queen would get married here.” She started with a royal color palette of regal blues and purples, added a bit of gold and guild, and hit the mark. Guests dined family style on a delicious grilled dinner by emily’s catering group, at tables dripping in rich purple linens, gold chargers, and hem stitched linen napkins. Azaela Floral Design created beautiful branch arrangement centerpieces with glittering crystals, bringing a bit of glamour into the rustic setting. Each table had a champagne bucket of Dom that invited guests to pop the cork themselves and get festive.

With the barn doors open, guests danced the night away to their amazing 80’s cover band and ended the night with a sparkler send off. Let’s start the day with Rose’s amazing shoes. AMAZING!

After their beautiful ceremony, Harris and Soulaf’s family and friends gathered on the avenue in Greenwich at L’escale at the Delamar Hotel. L’escale is the most fabulous French restaurant I’ve been to in Connecticut and has such a quaint and luxurious atmosphere. Their chef has been on Iron Chef not once…. but twice! And I can assure you his culinary delights that evening were just as delicious as you would imagine. Their staff is beyond amazing and every detail of Soulaf and Harris’ big day was executed flawlessly! Guests sipped cocktails and ate bite-sized hors’dourves on the patio overlooking Greenwich harbor. Their escort cards were created by Lilah Paper and displayed on a beautiful purple lamour linen. Mini arrangements in antique silver urns adorned the cocktail tables.

After cocktail hour guests were invited into L’escale’s dining room to enjoy a sumptuous meal especially selected by our couple. Each table was draped in gorgeous purple linens with towering centerpieces by Jessica’s Country Flowers. Full of crystals, lavender and ivory roses, antiqued hydrangea and submerged orchids. Satellite arrangements flanked their centerpiece along with a flurry of candlelight. The custom menus were created by Lilah Paper and sat on top of a lavender napkin and antiqued silver charger. Each guest also received a silver box filled with delectable Munsons Chocolate Truffles — a Connecticut favorite! Our dear friends at Ice Matters also carved this incredible ice luge with their monogram and a design from the couture invitations that Lilah Paper created. The entire room was lit by the talented Rob of AfterHours, who also DJ’ed the entire evening.

The new Mr. & Mrs. Grannick enjoyed their first dance amongst their family and friends. Their incredible… and I mean… INCREDIBLE cake was created by the talented Ana Parzych. It was a five tier masterpiece with a custom monogram. On top were the most beautiful purple sugar flowers!!! Just when you thought their wedding couldn’t get any more beautiful…. after dinner… belly dancers!!!

My girl Laura Jordan of Jordan Dance is unbelievable. Not only she is drop dead gorgeous, but this girl can shake her hips like no ones business!!!! Her and her partner put on a 25 minute show that surprised everyone. They were AMAZING!!! After their standing ovation it was time to join in, dance, and spend the rest of the evening celebrating!!

After tossing her bouquet, Harris and Soulaf left in a gorgeous rose petal send off for their honeymoon to Hawaii. Thank you so much for allowing me to be part of your incredible, one-of-a-kind celebration!! It was sincerely an honor and a privilege.

I had the distinct pleasure of coordinating, designing and spending my birthday with Harris and Soulaf in September of 2009. They first came to me in 2008 on the brink of engagement wanting a wedding that incorporated Harris’ grandfathers home in Greenwich and Soulaf’s French Moroccan heritage. They began the day at Soulaf’s home where she got ready, surrounded by her parents and siblings. They were so fortunate in having the incredible Carla Ten Eyck capture every moment of their day. Soulaf wore an incredible gown from The White Dress by the Shore. She had on the most AMAZING custom veil, studded in hundreds of swarvoski crystals. It was truly breathtaking (and heavy!!!). The talented Ellie Esper traveled all the way from NYC to do Soulaf’s hair and makeup. Her beautiful bouquet, filled with white roses and orchids, was by Jessica’s Country Flowers.

Harris spent the morning with his brothers prepping for the grand festivities. He wore a custom suit with a very chic purple tie! His late grandfather, Irving, raised his family in the home where Harris and Soulaf were to be married. The back yard is an incredible oasis and the most beautiful backdrop to their incredible day. Harris and Soulaf met when she came to work at his pharmacy in Greenwich during a summer break from school. They’re romance bloomed and the rest… well, its history!

Soulaf’s sister was her matron of honor while Harris’ youngest brother was his best man. They had a beautiful ring bowl created by Palomas Nest.

Their arbor in which they were married under had roses and hydrangea weaved through out, created by Jessica’s Country Flowers. It was all white with draping fabric. A custom aisle runner was created by I Do Originals. They were able to lift a piece of their invitation design, which was a custom piece from Lilah Paper, and hand paint it onto their runner in purple, with silver and white accents. The beautiful purple and white program that Kalyn designed, with the same elements, sat peacefully on each chair. We had boxes of lavender rose petals for tossing. Pretty Moroccan lanterns flanked the aisle too.

Soo… is Signature Event Rentals not awesome? Their furniture totally made our tablescape go from cool to incredible. I loved their white dining table and we decided to use their Alice Pop hot pink chairs, mixed in with the white padded, clear backed. Elisabeth created a series of beautiful and simple pink arrangements down the center of the table in vintage milk glass containers… gorgeous!!

Party Rentals Ltd in Greenwich and New Preston supplied the hot pink glass chargers and some of the dinner plates. We also used their gold rimmed wine / champagne glasses and gold flatware. All the other pieces are vintage china (lots of limoges), including the tea cups and saucers, white/gold dinner plates and the aqua soup bowls are all courtesy of my friend and etsy shop owner, Jen. Check out her store, Jen’s Closet!

I added little bottles of Moet at each place setting and floated white raspberries in each champagne glass (they were yum!). The beautiful art deco napkins came from this fabulous antique store in Seymour, Connecticut called Yesterday’s Luxuries. They are made of linen and are so delicate and beautiful! Definitely a set of keepers.

For those of you who don’t know, Carla runs an amazing workshop for photographers once a month where she spends an entire day shooting, educating, and discussing her artform. I’ve attended two Ten Eyck Tuesdays and Carla is amazing!! If you are a photographer in the area (you should travel here if your not!) I highly recommend Carla’s workshop. They are so thorough and detailed. Plus, Carla puts the sass in sass-a-frass.

The location for the shoot was really awesome. The building is an interior designer’s dream, full of lots of shops from furniture to lighting. We took over a blank industrial space with nothing except a few sheets of unused drywall laid up against the wall.

This gorgeousness is all courtesy of Carla and Beth Chapman of White Dress by the Shore who dressed and styled our gorgeous models. Don’t you just LOVE this short wedding gown and feather hair fascinator? It was so delicate and pretty in person! I could have played dress up for hours with all the amazing accessories Beth brought.

That gorgeous, vintage pink bouquet is by the equally talented Elisabeth of BLUSH floral design. I love Dan’s peacock feathered boutonniere. Can you see the peacock feathers tucked into Mandie’s bouquet? Check the neck collage of images!

Pretty gorgeous, right? The furniture is from my FAVORITE rental company, Signature Event Rentals, who are responsible for most of the awesomeness you see. That gorgeous white couch? The clear-backed and hot pink dining chairs?! The leather tufted wall panels?!?! The WHITE dinning table?!?!?! Yeah, they pretty much rule. They’re the best, hands down, and we LOVED having their furniture at the shoot!

Elisabeth created a bed of tightly arranged hot pink carnations for our escort cards, which were pennant flags that I made and hand wrote in gold ink. Antonia from Flower upon Flour blew us away with her tasty little gold petit fours with the hot pink fleur de lis… but the pièce de résistance was definitely her INSANE cake!!

Antonia and I had discussed the color story and inspiration behind the shoot… and when she showed up with this…. we were like… seriously?! A teal cake with a gold birdcage on top and hot pink feathers?!

So I am in love with Lisa & Marc’s purple and lavender reception. Purple is such an underused color and I love when brides use it (particularly because it is one of MY wedding colors!). L’escale added the perfect backdrop of elegance mixed with Parisian food. I love the white birch tree used to hold the table numbers (which are written in french), and the dainty silver chargers. The centerpieces are so lovely too, with lavender roses, white hydrangea and ranunculus.

For favors, Lisa and Marc gave out customized Hershey’s kisses in purple and chocolate covered pretzels. Yum! Guests filled up white craft bags that were personalized with the letter “L”, their monogram, which was carried through out.

Their three tiered wedding cake was covered in a beautiful lavender fondant with white sugar flowers and their monogram. Love it!

Lisa and Marc met through their summer share house on Fire Island in 2005. Their relationship blossomed quickly and they both knew that they would be be married. After their 2nd anniversary they took a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where Marc surprised Lisa with a marriage proposal. From the moment they started planning they knew they didn’t want to have a typical wedding.

After looking at many different wedding venues they fell in love with The Delamar Hotel on Greenwich’s beautiful scenic harbor. The elegant boutique hotel had all of its events catered through L’Escale’s mouthwatering French restaurant which provided a perfect backdrop for their French country inspired wedding.

Lisa wore an amazing dress by Alvina Valenta and carried a gorgeous bouquet of white and purple flowers. They weaved these colors throughout the wedding, using dark plum, lavender, and white. I love the ring barer pillows and their elegant white and purple program!

After their ceremony, the couple and their guests headed inside The Lilly Lake Inn to dine on a simple and yummy buffet of comfort food, keeping with the couple’s free and comfortable feel. They loved their three tier, soft yellow cake filled with a light strawberry champagne mousse with ivory butter cream frosting. Doesn’t it look delish? Guests also ate homemade Greek cookies, something that Jeremy’s late father enjoyed.

Their amazingly colorful color palette donned the tables in orange, fuchsia, deep purple and lime green. They used the letter P as their monogram in much of the decor, such as the cake topper, the floral wreath at their ceremony and the monogram on the invitations. Alex even had a little P attached to her bouquet! Guests signed a platter that the couple purchased and took home delicious favors.

Real Connecticut Wedding: Alex & Jeremy

Jeremy and Alex really wanted a low key wedding ceremony: something fresh and simple with no frills. They had the ceremony outside at the Lily Lake Inn under a willow tree. A close friend and his band played the ceremony music which was the instrumental of Sara Evans “Could Not Ask for More” . They had Alex’s godmother and Jeremy’s godfather pick a reading, poem or even something that they wrote that they felt was meaningful to surprise them with and read it at the ceremony. There ceremony was intimate.

If you haven’t noticed, Alex and Jeremy’s florals are colorful and amazing! They are so bold, fun, and different. Her flowers were a mix of orange, fuchsia, deep purple and lime green. Alex held the mix and each of the women in the bridal party held one solid color of each. Believe it or not, Alex had no idea what kind of flowers she was going to have or what it was going to look like. Her flowers were a gift from her boss, the owner of Fleur de Lys in New Haven, and she was not allowed to work on it! In the brides words, “It was a wonderful gift and I had no reservations of leaving that in her hands.”

The decor was just simple. Flowers and candlelight. Romantic but a little funky and fun with lots of color. Alex says, “Working in the industry definitely gave me the courage to think outside the box. There are a lot of colors out there, but even the brightest can be classy. That’s why all the color was only in the flowers. All my girls wore a black dress of their choice and all the guys wore black and gray. Just a pop of color!” A pop indeed! And I love it!

Alex and Jeremy met while out separately with friends at a bar. She knew his best friend Rob who had lived on the same floor as she had at Southern Connecticut State University. She didn’t want to go out that night but her friend INSISTED that she join them. Alex was the designated driver for the evening, intensely bored and sitting alone in a booth. Jeremy came over and asked if she wanted company. The rest is history!

How did he propose?

After 4 1/2 years of dating we finally decided to take a vacation together. I should have known that something was up because Jeremy was the one who suggested the Disney vacation (he leaves the social planning up to me). It was raining like crazy when we got there and continued to for a number of hours. We went out to dinner and finally the rain had stopped when we were leaving. The hotel we were staying at had man made beaches all around so we went for a walk. I was tired from the traveling and annoyed with the rain, but that soon changed when he got down on one knee in the sand and asked me to marry him!

I love brides who roll up their sleeves and get involved in the process of creating for their wedding. Nothing is more amazing than when a bride hand crafts her invitations from scratch. Ashley did just that when she created these thoughtful and amazing invitations for her wedding! I love how the story of how they came to be unfolds in the invitation. You can see how much time and thought they put into designing them and she did such a wonderful job!

Ashley decided to make her own invitations when she couldn’t find what she wanted. She researched paper and ordered samples over a series of three months. She hand folded the accordion style invitation, cut and glued the printed cardstock and pictures on each panel. The final touches were the ribbon which held it closed and the printed inner and outer envelopes. To put it in her own words: “It was a lot of work!” They ended up being her pride and joy and really started the whole theme of “home,” which you can see throughout their wedding. This led into the napkin cards which was a letter that she to their guests thanking them for their love and support. To tie it all together, she created her own favors which were a set of 4 stoneware coasters. Three of them had the images used in the invitations of their three main “homes” CT, CA, and England, and the fourth had the main line from the napkin card, “Home is the comfort, support, and love of friends & family.”

I asked Ashley to describe her wedding day decor and style. She wanted to use her favorite color, pink, but add a spin to it as they were married during the fall. She chose a warm, salmon colored pink to fit in with the season. For her tablescapes she ordered 289 class cylinder vases in varying sizes, which she and her mom covered with a beautiful coral colored tissue paper. Now that is DIY dedication! This tablescape provided a really romantic glow with all the candles lit inside and provided the exact kind of atmosphere that Ashley and Mark wanted!

The flowers in her bouquet were shades of coral, salmon, peach and pink with curly willy branches within the flowers. She also used some as centerpieces to give it an authentic, organic autumn feel.

Guests dinned on a personalized menu that the couple crafted with the Seaman’s Inne. They show stopper? A last minute addition to the menu — a seafood pot pie with Stonington scallops and shrimp in a Maine lobster cream sauce. Can you say yum? Ashley and Mark loved that they had local, fall comfort food. They also paid homage to Mark’s British upbringing with the pot pie! e guests enjoyed a sweet little snack on the dance floor as they skipped the traditional wedding cake and opted for butler passed mini cupcakes, which is so Carrie-chic (remember her fabulous book launch party? love it!)

What family traditions did you incorporate into your wedding?

We tried to pay tribute to Mark’s English culture in subtle ways- the feather fascinator in my hair, the pot pie, and lots of British 80s pop on the dance floor! I tied my grandfathers alter boy pin on my bouquet and carried my Gram’s hankie (which I did end up needing halfway through the ceremony!) Other than that, I think it was more about the people we are today, the life we have built together, and the traditions that we maybe created for future generations.

What is the secret to a successful marriage?

I’m not sure if I’m actually qualified to say after only 4 months! BUT… I think what makes mine and Mark’s marriage wonderful is that there is no one else on earth I’d rather spend my time with. We know how to make each other laugh and more importantly, we know how to laugh at ourselves. Everything about us, as a couple, is honest, true, and sincere. I think that overall, what will continue to make our marriage successful over time is our commitment to family. Whether it’s a family of 2 or 10, it’s the commitment to your family and the life you have created together, that makes it a success.

The Gown

I had a really hard time when I was trying dresses on. Everything was really beautiful but I was just torn between the old, traditional me that I thought I’d be on my wedding day, and the new, fashion conscious girl that I have become. I love high fashion couture and it just didn’t seem right to ignore that! I went to the trunk show and the designer told me the dress was “made for me!” I’m sure he says that to everyone, but his French accent got me… I was sold! I feel in love with the contrast of the traditional overall appearance and the details that made it feel very high-fashion. The overall look was relatively traditional but the amazing details made it so special and very fashion forward. The asymmetrical line of the bust and the opening of the skirt to that crazy fabulous tulle- you can’t see it in the pictures, but there were crimped, pleated, and beaded pieces of tulle tumbling out of the dress. I kept saying the dress was like a mullet- business on the left, party on the right! Truly, it was an amazing piece of craftsmanship and 100% embodied who I am. That’s L-O-V-E! I was also obsessed with my poofy veil! Ah… I get excited just remembering it! Overall, my look for the day was everything I had always dreamed of. I really unleashed my inner Carrie.

Details!

The feather fascinator Ashley wore in her hair (shown in detail in our last post) is traditional with formal attire in England, where Mark is from. It was Ashley’s little homage to his heritage… plus it made her feel a little like Carrie (Bradshaw!). On her Grandfather’s altar pin, which was lovingly affixed to her bouquet: “I always joked with my Grandpa that he just had to stick around to be at my wedding. He passed away the year before we got engaged, but I knew he was there with me on my wedding day. His alter boy pin helped me to feel like he was closer.”

What you can’t see…

Just prior to the ceremony, Ashley’s nerves got the best of her. She held hands with her sister and Maid of Honor and sang — which made everyone very emotional!

Describe your wedding ceremony

Noank Baptist Church is just the most simple, beautiful, quintessential “New England” church we could dream of. The light and the surroundings were to die for. We did not have a church of our own, so finding one for the ceremony was difficult. From the first day we spoke with Reverend Paul we knew he had to marry us. His warm and caring nature truly made us feel welcome and at home there. His service was very personal, and his homily truly felt like a heart-felt conversation between the three of us and the love of our guests surrounding us just brought it all together. Halfway through my vows I starting squealing the words, which was quite embarrassing but it gave us all a little laugh! We spent so much time planning the day and the reception, but as it turned out, the ceremony itself was the most amazing part of the whole day. It just felt so true and so natural. It was beautiful. Also- one of my favorite parts of the ceremony was walking down the aisle with my dad to Mark’s favorite song. I wrote out Oasis’ “Wonderwall” to be played by my favorite instrument, the cello and surprised Mark with it. It was awesome!

I was so excited to hear about the wedding of Ashley and Mark from their photographer Amanda of Orchard Cove Photography. I remembered seeing their wedding on her blog a few months ago and I’m so thrilled that we can feature it here!

Ashely Kilpatrick and Mark Hodson were married on September 20th, 2008 in a jubilant ceremony at the Noank Baptist Church in Groton, Connecticut. Later on in the day, their 140 guests gathered to celebrate at the Seamen’s Inne in Mystic, Connecticut. I love Ashley & Mark’s wedding for all the personal touches they incorporated and its “Old England” (check out some of the guests fun hats!) meets “New England” vibe. Plus, WAIT until you hear all about the amazing Cymbeline dress she wore — her wedding day look is definitely glam couture and we love it!

How did you two meet?

Mark and I worked together at Major League Soccer Camps in Mystic, Connecticut. We were friends for several years before we started dating.

How did he propose?

Mark and I were visiting his family in England for the holidays [and] he took me to York Mister, which I had been dying to see. It’s an absolutely incredible cathedral where he graduated college. With the holiday season and amazing scenery, he got down on one knee in a quiet corner of the cathedral and asked me to be his wife.

Lisa’s bridal gown was a Monique Lhuillier’s “Miranda”.The bridesmaids’ gowns were varying Simple Silhouettes in a beautiful spring green from Bella Bridesmaids in Westport. The groom wore a khaki Brooks Brothers suit and tie, which complimented the groomsmens’ blue blazers and khaki’s from their own personal collection. Ceremony, reception, and caterer is the Owenego Inn in Branford, Connecticut. The speciality non-dairy wedding cake was baked fondly by Cakes Unlimited in Torrington. Florist, including bouquets and centerpieces, was Fleur de Lys of New Haven, Connecticut. Their save-the-dates were hand crafted with love, but the invitations were designed by Elm City Fine Stationers in New Haven, Connecticut. Guests danced the night away courtesy of the band, Brick Park out of Boston, Mass. Some of the details that she did herself: luminaries that lined the path outside of the reception site after dark. She also sewed buttons onto a piece of thick cardstock in the shape of a number and used them as table numbers (so cute!). She hand stamped a button in the corner of each place card and created a board where the place cards were hung. How did she do it? She took a large corkboard and covered the surface with a yellow and white patterned piece of wrapping paper. She then stretched white ribbons of varying texture and width across the board and the cards were staggered across the ribbons. She also created a flip flop filled basket that had a sign that read “kick off your heels.”

The Wedding Menu

The menu contained elements of summer. In addition to the Owenego Inn’s standard appetizers, Lisa’s father ordered fresh shrimp from a local seafood market which they served with cocktails. For dinner, a gazpacho soup was served followed by grilled salmon with a peach salsa in addition to filet mignon. They chose to add in-season local foods such as carrots with sugar snap peas. For dessert, they served Lisa’s favorite Ciao Bella Blackberry Cabernet sorbet in addition to wedding cake. Yum! The cake was beautifully decorated with yellow frosting as the canvas to white details of vines with leaves, swiss dots and buttons on the top tier.

We asked Lisa… what was it like planning your wedding and were there any challenges you had to overcome?

I enjoyed planning my wedding from beginning to end. We spent some time just after becoming engaged to enjoy the special time in our lives and let it all sink in before delving into the world of wedding planning. The only significant challenge I had to overcome was to find a baker willing and able to accommodate my food allergies and bake a cake without using any dairy products. Some people refused to entertain the idea of creating a frosting without butter cream and hung up on me others pitched the idea of cakes made with fondant frosting and no filling whatsoever. After searching high and low I found a kind woman in Torrington who specializes in dairy free baking. She explained that her son has food allergies and she had created a recipe that he could enjoy. We made the trip to Cakes Unlimited and sampled her cake. It was moist and delicious. Our wedding guests raved about the cake not knowing that it did not contain any milk. Friends and family went back for seconds!

What family traditions did you incorporate into your wedding?

Soon after we became engaged we made the discovery that both of our mothers wore amazingly similar wedding gowns. They were simple, Mexican style free flowing dresses. We felt compelled to exhibit this coincidence and displayed framed wedding pictures of their weddings as well as pictures of each set of grandparents on the guest book table.

The day was documented and captured by the talented photographer, Robin Dini of Robin Dini Photography. Hair and makeup for the bride and party was done by Dan of Studio 8 Salon in North Haven. Lisa’s bridal gown was a Monique Lhuillier’s “Miranda”.The bridesmaids’ gowns were varying Simple Silhouettes in a beautiful spring green from Bella Bridesmaids in Westport. The groom wore a khaki Brooks Brothers suit and tie, which complimented the groomsmens’ blue blazers and khaki’s from their own personal collection. Ceremony, reception, and caterer is the Owenego Inn in Branford, Connecticut. The speciality non-dairy wedding cake was baked fondly by Cakes Unlimited in Torrington. Florist, including bouquets and centerpieces, was Fleur de Lys of New Haven, Connecticut. Their save-the-dates were hand crafted with love, but the invitations were designed by Elm City Fine Stationers in New Haven, Connecticut. Guests danced the night away courtesy of the band, Brick Park out of Boston, Mass. In lieu of favors, the couple made a generous donation to to NAMI, the National Alliance of Mental Illness.Similar Posts:

Lisa and Sean designed a truly natural ceremony, with welcoming details. Some of her favorites included the natural reed fans that were placed on each guests’ chair at the ceremony, the aisle lined with potted sunflowers, and the giant white buttons that were attached to the white satin wraps of each bouquet. The bouquet’s were beautiful and organic, with large yellow sunflowers, yellow and white gerbera daisies, and stephanotis. Sean and his father created an arbor while in Maine made of birch wood that they were married under. It was decorated in large sunflowers, gerbera daisies, and beautiful greens. And for those fabulous wedding programs awaiting guests in a basket? They were created by Sean’s cousin’s wife. She added in artistic touches like funky handwriting and hand drawn flowers.

The wedding ceremony of Lisa & Sean… in their own words

Our wedding ceremony was beautiful. We had fantastic weather. It was breezy and cool. We hired a Spanish guitarist, a violinist and trumpeter. The groomsmen and groom followed the reverend to the ceremony site and they stood and waited by the birch arbor. The bridesmaids walked down the long aisle from the arch by the Inn to the set up of chairs overlooking the ocean. My father and I walked in to Pachebel’s Canon in D. The ceremony was brief yet very personal and romantic. There were two readings: one from the Bible and the other a Pablo Neruda poem. Guests told us that they felt the love and it reignited their feelings towards their significant other. It felt easy going and simple. We hadn’t planned everything to the minute and our rehearsal was cut short by a rainstorm. Everything fell into place in a very natural, organic motion. I remember every minute of our ceremony because, surprisingly, we both were able to be present in the moment without distraction. It truly felt interactive, sweet and comfortable for everyone who witnessed it.

I’m really excited to debut our new feature of real Connecticut weddings with the story of Lisa and Sean. Lisa Manke and Sean Kimball were married in an intimate ceremony at the gorgeous Owenego Inn in Branford, Connecticut on August 9th, 2008. Surrounded by 150 of their closest family and friends, their wedding was a detailed reflection of their amazing love story.

How did you two meet?

Sean and I met while studying abroad in our junior year of college. We were introduced by mutual friends while touring the Vatican gardens in Rome in November. It was raining and I had come prepared with an umbrella. Sean, on the other hand, wore a rain soaked fleece jacket and shivered in the cold. I offered to share my umbrella with him and he happily accepted. We laughed, talked and lagged behind the group. From that point on we were inseparable. We spent all of our free time together for our final three weeks in Italy, hitting up museums, exploring around town and drinking Chianti after dark in the piazzas. Their first dates involved trips to Venice, Pompeii and Sorrento, and studying for finals soon became less of a priority!

How did he propose?

Sean proposed in June of 2007. It was nearing my birthday and he told me that we would be going out to celebrate a week in advance. I was tired and ambivalent about going altogether. Sean lured me by telling me that he had made reservations at our favorite Italian restaurant. We drove to Branford CT and he told me that we had some time to kill before heading to dinner. He suggested that we visit Hotchkiss Grove, where I had spent every childhood summer. We parked in front of my parent’s house and walked along the beach towards the pier. As we got closer I was able to see that there was something set up at the end of the pier. Sean escorted me closer and brought me to a small table that had a gorgeous bouquet of roses and a bucket with ice and champagne. I sat down, grinning from ear to ear with butterflies in my stomach. Sean proposed to me on one knee and I said yes without hesitation. We spent the rest of the celebrating at our favorite restaurant with a bottle of Chianti from the year that we met. He had reserved us a room at the neighboring Owenego Inn which ended up being the future site of our wedding ceremony and reception.

Jubilee Events and the Connecticut Wedding Blog are really excited to announce a new feature we are going to be debuting in 2009: Real Connecticut Weddings! This is an open invitation to all our readers, former brides, and favorite vendors to submit photographs of gorgeous Connecticut weddings which will be featured weekly on our blog.

For photographers: Please submit your photographs to: candice@eventjubilee.com with Real Connecticut Wedding in the title. All photographs must be at 72 dpi and cannot exceed 1000px in width or height. Please include an email address or telephone number of the couple so I can contact them for a little Q&A session. It may be a good idea to contact the couple prior to submitting to let them know that they might be featured on our blog.

For couples: Please check with your photographer prior to submitting your photographs. Email your photographs to candice@eventjubilee.com with Real Connecticut Wedding in the title. All photographs must follow the same specifications above.

For our other vendors: If you’ve recently been apart of a fabulous Connecticut fete, please contact the photographer of the event and ask them to submit the photographs to us. We will send you an email asking for specific details regarding our involvement!
