What’s in My Closet Featuring Alison Lassiter

Ali-Headshot_WebMrs. Alison Lassiter is one of my favorite fashionable friends. Always sporting some ridiculously fabulous handbag, she can be seen toting everything from Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Jimmy Choo. In fact, when I get my hands on some new leather over-the-shoudler goodness she is one of the few people I boast to about my new purchase! And since she has such a tremendous eye for fashion, it’s no coincidence that she is an amazing photographer. Her company, Alison Lassiter Photography, is based in Connecticut and captures the most dreamy pictures of couples in love on their wedding day.

I loved reading Alison’s write up for our What’s in My… blog series and I know you will, too. Without further adieu, here is Alison in her own words describing her style and what she loves most in that treasure trove closet of hers!

“Style is so subjective, and it has little to do with what’s fashionable or on-trend. It’s wearing what you love; what makes you feel most confident. My personal style is pretty simple: comfortable chic. I gravitate towards effortless pieces that can transition from day to night. I love to incorporate special accessories and statement pieces into my daily wardrobe, so I tend to keep my clothing, for the most part, pretty easy and free of adornment. Except for sequins. There’s always room for a little sparkle. “

Here are some of Alison’s favorite things…

Beloved & one-of-a-kind
I saw these heels and had to have them. It was that kind of love. Forget the price tag ($328); forget the impracticality (they have a yellow silk upper). They would be unique. They would be memorable. They would be mine.

When I first showed them to my adorable, and practical, sister she said, “Alison, really? Those are gorgeous, but you can only wear them inside of a museum.” Hence, why they were dubbed my “museum shoes” between her and I. If she only knew how much I enjoy them! I was actually fearful of photographing them for this feature because when you look closely you can see some of the wear, but I really wanted all of you to see the beauty of a well-made, well-worn wardrobe favorite.

So, how did I justify the investment? I’m a sucker for statement pieces. The cherry on top is that I knew I’d be the only person in my social circle with a pair. I love that I can wear these heels once and, without fail, people who are seeing them for the first time continue to ask me about them for years to come. | Rachel Comey Silk Flora Pin Dot Heels from Anthropologie {pictured above}

Accessories Galore
Two of my most favorite smaller accessories are glamorous staples that I gifted myself. This vintage Louis Vuitton piece is special to me because I got it from an online reseller of vintage and used goods, and I got a superb deal on it. It’s the perfect size. I use it these days primarily as a wallet, but it can also be used as a clutch. I love the gusseted pockets and the small zipper compartment under the flap!

I once read that you should always splurge on anything you put on your face, because it is, after all, the first thing people see when they look at you. Ever since then, I’ve invested in designer sunglasses, lotions and creams, because they just make you look and feel fabulous. These are my current favorites by Karen Walker. They feature a modern spin on the traditional cat eye that will flatter any face shape. | Vintage Louis Vuitton Monogram Pochette Rabat (1985); Karen Walker Number One sunglasses in Crazy Tortoise {pictured above}

Merino wool sweaters
I practically collect fine-gauge knit merino wool sweaters from J.Crew. Cardigans, crewnecks, turtlenecks — doesn’t matter. I am in total lust with their coziness during our chilly New England winters. I own about a half dozen Tippi sweaters because they layer easily over blouses and under blazers, and the flattering crewneck looks amazing on everyone.

Billowy blouses
I have dozens of these breezy, light-as-air tops that pair perfectly with skinny jeans and flats for adorable and fashionable daytime weekend attire. Throw on a statement necklace and a blazer, and you’re set for a night out. | Blouses from The Limited; bubble necklace from J.Crew

Ballet flats
When I was in my 20s, I always felt like I had to wear heels because I’m only 5’2″. I wanted to be 5’6″ so badly. Huge mistake. I think I did irreversible damage on my lower back and, to this day, it is really difficult for me to wear a heel more than three inches high. Thank goodness ballet flats came back into style with a vengeance! They are the perfect addition to any outfit, come in a wide variety of colors, and, in my opinion, have just as significant of an impact as heels. I own about 25 pairs of ballets and never tire of wearing them.

Last year, in an interview with InStyle, Natalie Portman said that she really connected with Alber Elbaz of Lanvin because he always told her, “People will try to make you wear heels because you’re short. But that’s the most beautiful thing about you, so only wear flats.” She went on to say, “I’ve learned it’s very French to celebrate something about yourself that others might say is your flaw.”

I love that. (and we do too!)

The perfect party dress (+ heels!)
Here is my exception the rule with heels: they are a must when you are wearing a killer dress. You’ll hear most fashion critics say that a little black dress is the must-have in cocktail attire, but I don’t think cocktail dresses have to be black to be perfect. In fact, I have a few LBDs, but my favorite go-to dress is actually a simple, yet stunning, navy blue lace shift; it’s perfect with heels at a wedding, or to pair with black tights and flats for a more casual outfit, and the navy is a nice alternative to basic black. For the holidays I wanted something a bit more festive, so I went with this burgundy chiffon stunner. I love the fun gold foil dots and the one- shoulder detail. I paired it with these gorgeous sparkle heels for that little something extra.

Love for louis vuitton
My personal love for Louis Vuitton runs deep because my husband has bought me almost every piece I own. My favorite, and the most meaningful to me, is my Vernis Alma. On the morning of our second anniversary, I stepped out of the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and padded into our bedroom. On our bed was an enormous brown Louis Vuitton box. I absolutely squealed with excitement and I’m pretty sure I cried. Inside was the most beautiful bag I’ve ever seen. My husband just stood there grinning, so very pleased with what he had accomplished. I’m not easily surprised. He picked it out personally, and was convinced it would be the perfect addition to my fall wardrobe. He was so right. The rich aubergine hue is a pretty terrific neutral, and can be worn with a variety of colors.
