As one of our favorite publications, Bliss Celebrations Magazine, prepares to launch its 2015 issue this week, I thought we ought to blog our photoshoot for their 2014 cover! I know– how belated– right? Well the truth is, every time I sat down to blog all this gorgeousness I got overwhelmed by the vast number of beautiful images from Carla Ten Eyck and all the pretty details we put together with the best team. No, seriously. I tried and tried, but looking through these hundreds of pictures I couldn’t figure out where to start!

The concept for this photoshoot was from a white and gold t-shirt I bought at j.crew with pineapples on it. Then, I found myself flipping through InStyle Magazine and saw the most preciously branded cans of sangria. Don’t ask me how we managed to pull off such a fabulous photoshoot from those two sources of inspiration– but this will go down as one of my absolute favorite collaborations with a team of wedding creatives who pour every ounce of their energy into making something beautiful!

That is the best part about doing these editorial photoshoots– the creative team. I always find myself leaving, with my car bursting at the seems with props (which were neatly packed on the way there, but somehow, nothing seems to fit back the way you had it the first time!), feeling utterly fulfilled and down-right awestruck at the level of talent I’ve managed to find myself amongst. When I opened our company in 2007 I never thought for a million years our work would be featured, but even moreso, I never thought how a creative team such as this would bring such happiness into the soul of my career!

This shoot is filled with so much joyful prettiness, but there are some things I want to point out as my favorites. When I called Diane Guadett after showing her the inspiration and said, “what do you think of a floral table runner?”, she loved the idea. Never in my wildest dreams did I think she would bring the mother of all floral table runners, filed with hundreds of vibrantly colored flowers. When she walked in, I think Carla Ten Eyck almost had a brain aneurysm. It was so fantastically gorgeous and over the top, yet in these images, feels so natural and wondrous.

There is no denying how much our company loves working with Nichole Michel of Coral Pheasant. Every project we have the opportunity to work on with her, be it with clients or photoshoots, she always blows us away. Nichole thinks about every meticulous detail as it relates to what she’s going to produce– and has the ability to see beyond what the inspiration is and make it her own. For this photoshoot she literally took my breath away. And then she showed up with all these quirky bits and pieces from her vast collection of estate sale winnings (she has the stamina to find cool stuff everywhere– the side of the road, in the dumpster, at some tag sale in your neighborhood– I can never understand how she gets so lucky! I only find baby cribs with 5 year old spit-up and old thigh masters) like the bronze candelabras and that animal figurine, which I embarrassingly don’t know what type of animal it is. For this paper story, she was on hand to style every frame that Carla took, and spent hours on the floor perfectly tweaking each piece of paper until she was happy with it.

We invited Rick of Emily’s Catering to be part of this shoot not only because we love him to pieces, but because he is doing some wonderful things with our clients’ events. He was food styling his heart out and did a tremendous job! Tracking down mini bottles of Makers Mark (Carla’s second aneurysm of the day), mini bottles of St. Germain and Don Julio. I respect Rick because he is a chef first, and a caterer second, always wanting to wow and impress our clients on any event we recommend him for.

My fashion partner in crime, Beth Chapman, never disappoints. She can put together any kind of style, from boho to Jackie O and it works. As with me, this photoshoot was intrinsically Beth: lady-like bows, stripes, pearls, big hair buns and rose colored cheeks. There is no fashion stylist in the state of Connecticut who has the foresight, dedication, and genuine passion for what she does.

Our friends at Ryan Designs provided these fabulous bars (which they built originally for us!) with bronze sequin fronts, the custom sequin chandeliers and the gorgeous crystal chandeliers above Libby’s dessert display. To say we love the team at Ryan Designs is an understatement. They are the best in the business and add so much beauty to our events– and we couldn’t do what we do without them. Plus, they are the kindest most genuine people you will ever come across.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! In honor of today’s festivities we wanted to share some Cinco de Mayo inspiration in this shoot conceptualized by Carla Ten Eyck (a lover of her strong Mexican heritage) and collaborated on by a team of fabulous vendors. Originally featured on Style Me Pretty many moons ago, this inspirational shoot still tugs at my heart as one of my favorites. The colors, the simplicity yet complexity, and all the goodies nestled within the alter that Diana & Tony worked on together. Enjoy!

Want to hear a funny story? I still have my treasured copy of The Great Gatsby that I “borrowed” from my sophomore English class in high school. It sits nestled on my bookshelf at home and from time to time I take it out and read a few passages. I’ve thumbed through its pages dozens of times and, each time I re-read this treasured book of mine, I always discover something new. I love The Great Gatsby from an academic perspective and even wrote a thesis on it in college, but like most, I also appreciate it for the red lipstick, short skirts and page boy haircuts. Why do you think we have such a fascination with the Roarin’ 20s? Every few years, I feel like this era creeps back into popular culture and for good reason– there is so much to be inspired by! And not to mention I was so excited to see this gorgeous shoot featured on Style Me Pretty this week.

It was no surprise that we decided to do a Great Gatsby inspired photoshoot. There were so many directions we could have gone in, but ultimately we chose to do something reminiscent of the era but had modern touches. We selected the historic Branford House Mansion overlooking the Fishers Island Sound in Groton Long Point, Connecticut for our location. Although it was November, there was lovely warmth in the air and we were blessed with a glorious sunset with just the right amount of cloud cover for delightful dimension.

I love the fashion elements that Beth Chapman of The White Dress by the shore put together; decadent, glamorous, opulent. Our bride wore several looks from a mini feather flapper style dress to a long sleeve satin faced chiffon gown. And our Gatsby, of course, wore a white dinner jacket that evoked the over the top parties he was so famous for hosting.

The paper story created by Nicole Michel of Coral Pheasant Stationery and Design, was rich with details. Elements such as the matchbook-style reception cards and the favor boxes that doubled as place cards allowed the guests something to open and discover.

Photographer Carla Ten Eyck used the magical light to assist in telling the visual tale. The mansion’s timeless, turn of the century beauty was further accentuated by a vintage sofa and tufted velvet chairs from New England Country Rentals. The oversized, dramatic fireplace that graces the main entrance created a stunning backdrop for the lavish tablescape. The table was the perfect combination of opulent and vintage, with a delicately sequined linen paired with mismatched antique floral china and Irish linen napkins trimmed in lace. The billowing flower arrangements from Hana Floral Design were the perfect finishing touch!

Modern Black & White Wedding Photoshoot: Inspiration

The inspiration for this modern black & white wedding  photoshoot all started after picking up a copy of the coffee table book from Alexander McQueen’s show at the MET, Savage Beauty. I was lucky enough to wander endlessly through this exhibition with my friend Nichole Michel of Coral Pheasant when it came into town, and even at that time, I was largely inspired by McQueen’s Autumn / Winter collection of crisply tailored, fitted, and masculine jackets, skirts, pants and dresses. McQueen once said (and noted by a byline in the book next to images of this exhibit), “I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.”

In tossing ideas around with our team, we set out to create a story of feminine meets masculine. I drafted up a pinterest board (the first time we’ve used one for our shoot!) and the rest is history.

Modern Black & White Wedding: The Details

We put together a simple color story of black and white, with shades of grey. Everywhere within the shoot you’ll see tailored lines, crisp typography, and masculine details like fitted jackets and top hats mixed with feminine frill of tulle and jewels. The fashion for this shoot was flawless, and leave it to none other than Beth Chapman to source some of the sickest accessories and custom made pieces, like the couture black suit made by Valentino Tailors. My favorite fashion look of the day is a toss up between our frilly tulle skirted dress with sexy black leather gloves, and the tulle skirt mixed with a tailored jacket– no shirt underneath. I also got to play a bit with my own closet here, bringing in my nude Jimmy Choo pumps and my most favorite and best shoe investment ever: my miu miu glitter booties.

Tony of Datura: A Modern Garden created a myriad of unqiue bouquets– everything from an embellished cane, to a whip (hello!) and some floral handcuffs (whew!). What I love most about Tony is that he’s never afraid to cross over boundaries, create something suggestive but beautiful and completely necessary. To me, he is my real life Alexander McQueen.

The Tablescape

Our tablescape might be my favorite yet; simple in color with a lot of textures that don’t seem to compete. I love the sequin black and white chevron linen from La Tavola— the pattern is a sexy take on the stripe, and the sequin gives us our feminine edge. Pinned on top, we boxed out the tablescape with a quilted leather linen from Nuage Designs. Our enormous white containers, smooth with a sensuous shape, held long rectangular boxes trimmed out with black sequin fabric, brimming with white tulips. On the table, we layered plates and things to create dimension; I am especially fond of these curvaceous plates from BHLDN and the “stick” shaped drink stirrers in our white glassware. Even the chairs are sexy, with their hard lines and grey color. At the last minute we decided they needed a pop, so Tony attached some orchids.

Nichole of Coral Pheasant created a luxurious paper story complete with patent leather like printing. Everything about this paper story is sleek, simple, sexy and is an attribute to how delicious typography really is!

And of course, who else could shoot this madness except the effervescent Carla Ten Eyck and company? And don’t forget to peep the behind-the-scenes video by none other than Jim Altieri at the end, with interviews from the designers themselves!

A little time ago we found ourselves back in paradise– which is located in Costa Rica– in case you didn’t know. Our friends at Stay in Costa Rica asked us to come back down and do some more creative work and we jumped at the chance. Costa Rica has to be one of my favorite places on earth. It’s tropical, exotic, friendly, laid-back, and beautiful. The setting for what we’ve dubbed our colorful beach photoshoot was on a remote beach only accessible by a questionable wooden bridge, where we hand carted all our belongings (including a spare roll of toilet paper– just in case). This day will go down as one of my favorite days in life. It was full of laughs, beautiful scenery, good friends, and lots of impromptu pretty. Everywhere you look in Costa Rica there is something beautiful; fossilized rocks, ornate trees with dangling fruit, bright flowers and picturesque coastlines. This photoshoot had the makings of everything above and more.

For this photoshoot we were inspired by the colorful Costa Rican oxcart and Josh from Metal Mermaid Press put his spin on the intricate design. With a plethora of bright, neon colors, big ball skirts mixed with flowey dresses, sparkle and gathered flowers from where ever Tony could find them– here’s what we came up with with gorgeous images by Carla Ten Eyck Photography.

When Beth from The White Dress by the Shore approached us all about doing this shoot, I went back to when I graduated-all the excitement, all the fun! I wanted to infuse every bit of that into this shoot and I wanted to bring in colors and details that made me feel this way. Now, a few years after I’ve graduated, I find myself looking forward to the next big party and wanted to design this so brides and their maids would find inspiration for a special shower or fun luncheon. Yellow and pink were easy to choose because they exude the energy and playfulness you will experience at either event!

The shoot took place in the beautiful Elizabeth Park Rose Garden in Hartford, so I took some inspiration from our surroundings. I wanted the flowers to play a role in everything! Our table was draped in pink, everything from the linens, chargers, and napkins right down to the chairs-it was a girly girl’s dream. Tony from Datura, A Modern Garden created a yellow rose runner down the table with pops of pink peonies. Hope from A Little Imagination Cakes not only designed individual cupcakes with colorful florets, she coupled them with an incredible pink and yellow-layered cake! Beth styled the models in fun sherbet colored dresses that played perfectly off the surrounding flowers. Throw in the charming paper details from Metal Mermaid Press and Carla Ten Eyck Photography and you have the day made!

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Costa Rica for Mandi and Dan’s amazing destination wedding! We adore Los Suenos Resort— and we especially love these amazing luxury homes from Stay in Costa Rica (a property management company that represents these gorgeous homes!). Mandi and Dan had an incredible wedding at one of these multi-million dollar beauts overlooking the bay– and it all started because of this amazing editorial fashion shoot we did one year prior! We have so many amazing images from this trip to share with you– but first up is our fashion shoot at Puesta Del Sol, Villa Artiv, and the beautiful Casa Marlin.

Our inspiration for this fashion shoot came from the luxury properties available at Stay in Costa Rica. Beth Chapman, stylist and owner of The White Dress by the shore wanted to create a luxurious, dramatic and romantic look for brides having a destination wedding. The natural landscape of Costa Rica and Los Suenos resort provided us with the majority of the flowers used in the bouquets, designed by Datura: A Modern Garden. Our fashion shoot mixes both a tropical feel and a modern, sophisticated and decadent direction.

The gowns and accessories were shot in the most amazing locations– from the multi-million dollar spanish influenced home of Puesta Del Sol with breathtaking views of the rainforest and three different pays that surround Los Suenos Resort to the modern and swanky digs at Villa Artiv with it’s vintage Louis Vuitton trunk and Pucci chair. All three of these luxurious properties are available for not only accommodations, but also for amazing wedding receptions and ceremonies!

A special shout out to my girl, Carla Ten Eyck, who is by far filled with the most talent I have ever seen. I am not even sure how she is able to make everything and everyone so beautiful, but by God, she does it every time!!!

This past fall we had the fun opportunity to co-create and design a fun, summer editorial shoot for The Connecticut Bride Magazine. Having just come off our fashion obsession of nautical glam, we worked with our creative counterparts to design this fun, preppy, and dressed up version of nautical on the Connecticut shoreline! We worked in your traditional seaside color story– blues, reds and yellows– with a bit of sparkle, lots of stripes and a little kate spade. What I’m also excited about is half my summer accessories got incorporated into this gorgeousness! A huge thank you to our talented team who made the day so fun: Carla Ten Eyck, Beth Chapman, Datura: A Modern Garden, Dana Bartone & Company, A Little Imagination Cakes, Coral Pheasant Stationery + Design, and a HUGE thank you to our dear friend Rachel Edwards at Dreamscapes Design Group for not being just lovely and wonderful, but such a gracious hostess for the day!! I just love this first look– colored shoes, colored jewels, those lockets (! which we all immediately purchased on the spot from Aquinnah and all now proudly own, and hope to not wear all at the same time, accidentally), striped puffy sleeved top, sparkly anchor bag…. love it all! The paper suite that Nichole from Coral Pheasant put together was spectacular. Sign. Me. Up. It was so well executed with so many fun little surprises– which I feel like is her signature.

I’m so excited to share with you some of the AMAZING images captured by Carla Ten Eyck at our Bliss Celebrations Cover shoot just a few short weeks ago. When Bliss contacted us to design a photoshoot for their cover they sent us a beautiful inspiration image of a woman pouring herself a glass of bubbly in a very 1950’s setting. We wanted to recreate that with a twist (of course!) for the modern woman looking to host a grand feminine soiree. What I love most about this shoot is how versatile it is– you can be inspired by the colors, textures, and details that our team pulled together for any kind of party– not just a wedding!

From the gorgeous Ivy & Aster gowns (and can we discuss that blush lace bolero?!) to the detailed and sweet paper from Coral Pheasant, this shoot has all the makings of what I love most! With a pink and gold color story, we brought in a lot of unique textures and shot this in a very raw construction space in downtown Hartford. In fact, it just so happens to be the first space our little creative team ever collaborated in (and was also on the first cover of Bliss Celebrations..!). I absolutely love Tony from Datura: A Modern Garden’s “classic” floral design. He made a container for our centerpiece out of boxwood (brilliant) and even created a mask bouquet for one of our models. Can you not see yourself toting a floral mask to your next party? I also love the boxwood trim that edged our gorgeous tablescape, which was overflowing with the prettiest cakes and macaroon tower from Confectionery Designs. The wide banded gold rimmed goblets to the individual raspberry trifles made for the most perfect setting. A special thank you to the amazing Beth Chapman of The White Dress by the shore who was our fashion stylist / director on this shoot and DD Nickel who is the artist behind the gorgeous beauty!
